How Often Should You Change Your Overgrip?
An overgrip is meant to be changed often. It is the cheapest way to keep your racket feeling the same every time you play. Here is a simple way to know when.
In short: change it when it stops feeling tacky. If you play two or three times a week, that is usually every one to two weeks. Heat, humidity and sweaty hands make it wear faster.
A rough guide by how often you play
| You play | Change your overgrip |
|---|---|
| 4 or more times a week | About every week |
| 2 to 3 times a week | Every 1 to 2 weeks |
| Once a week | Every 3 to 4 weeks |
| A few times a month | About once a month, or when it shows the signs below |
Signs it is time
- The surface looks shiny or smooth instead of matte.
- It feels slippery as soon as you start to sweat.
- You catch yourself squeezing harder to hold the racket.
- It is darker, frayed or starting to come loose near the top.
How to make it last longer
- Wipe your hands with a towel between games, not on the grip.
- Do not leave the racket in a hot car. Heat wears the grip and the racket.
- Let the grip dry after you play before it goes back in the bag.
What it costs to keep a fresh grip
With the Court pack of 12, each overgrip is $2.25; with the pack of 3, $3.00. If you change it every week, the pack of 12 lasts about three months. To put a new one on, follow how to wrap a padel overgrip.
